Practical information for your trip
Ideally, you should allow 4 to 5 days for Cape Town. This will give you plenty of time to explore the main highlights – such as Table Mountain, the colourful Bo-Kaap, the coastal road around the Cape of Good Hope and the most beautiful beaches – at your own pace. At the same time, you’ll have enough time to really soak up the city’s atmosphere without feeling rushed.
In Cape Town, you shouldn’t feel completely ‘free’ to move about at night as you might in many European cities. In lively, well-populated areas such as the Waterfront or certain restaurant and bar districts, it’s generally safe as long as you remain vigilant. In quieter or less touristy areas, however, it is advisable to use Uber or a taxi after dark and to avoid certain areas.
No specific compulsory vaccinations are generally required for Cape Town, provided you are travelling directly from Europe. However, the standard travel vaccinations – such as tetanus, diphtheria, whooping cough and hepatitis A – are recommended. Depending on the length of your stay, the nature of your trip and your specific activities, vaccinations against hepatitis B, typhoid or rabies may also be advisable.
