Wilderness is situated on the famous Garden Route in southern South Africa, between the towns of George and Knysna. The town lies directly on the coast of the Indian Ocean and is renowned for its long, unspoilt stretch of beach, lagoons and lush natural landscape. Despite its scenic beauty, Wilderness is a quiet and relaxed place and is considered an ideal stopover on a tour of the Garden Route.
Wilderness is renowned for its spectacular natural beauty along the Garden Route, with endless sandy beaches, a tranquil lagoon, dense forests and an impressive array of wildlife. The town is considered a paradise for outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking and birdwatching, whilst also offering tranquillity, a chance to slow down and unspoilt landscapes.
We generally recommend spending 2 to 3 days in Wilderness. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, explore the beaches and lagoons, and take part in activities such as kayaking or hiking in the surrounding area. If you’re just passing through the Garden Route, you can also plan for a single day – though a short stop of two to three nights is ideal to really soak up the atmosphere of the place.
