The main difference between Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire lies in their function and geographical extent. Aberdeen is a city in its own right on the north-east coast of Scotland and forms an urban centre with a large population, a university, a port and a strong economy, particularly in the oil and gas industry. The city is compact, densely populated and offers typical urban infrastructure such as shopping centres, cultural facilities and a well-developed transport network.
Aberdeenshire, on the other hand, is the much larger surrounding region that geographically encompasses Aberdeen but is administered separately from the city. This region consists mainly of rural areas with small towns, villages, coastal landscapes and plenty of nature. It is known for its castles, national parks and agricultural land. So whilst Aberdeen functions as an economic and cultural centre, Aberdeenshire is more associated with nature, tourism and rural life.
