Practical information for your trip

The Dolomites are located in northeastern Italy and form part of the Southern Limestone Alps. They stretch across the regions of South Tyrol, Trentino, and Veneto, creating one of the country’s most dramatic alpine landscapes. To the north, they border Austria (Tyrol), while the Piave Valley lies to the east and the Adige Valley to the west.

Well-known valleys and towns within the Dolomites include Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Cortina d’Ampezzo, Sesto, and the Fassa Valley. The region is renowned for its striking vertical rock formations, steep peaks, wide alpine meadows, and scenic mountain passes. Owing to their unique geological and natural significance, the Dolomites have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009.

We recommend avoiding the summer months. Between June and September, visitor numbers are particularly high, which not only leads to significantly higher prices, but also restricts access to many areas. Vehicles often have to be parked far away, or high fees are charged to reserve parking spaces and use access roads.

The best time to travel is therefore from mid-September, when the restrictions are lifted, until the end of October. The months of April and May are also attractive, when the weather is pleasant and the places are not yet crowded with visitors.

Although the Dolomites are compact, the numerous mountain passes and picturesque villages mean that travel distances and times should not be underestimated. The region offers an enormous variety of experiences – from hiking, cycling, and climbing to photography and pure relaxation. To enjoy the landscapes and activities at a leisurely pace, we recommend staying for at least 4 to 5 days.
