Highlights: Venice -> Lake Garda -> Parma -> Portofino -> Pisa -> Florenz

Day 1 - 2: Venice

Venice captivates visitors with its unique location, historic palaces, and unmistakable charm. Canals, bridges, and narrow streets characterize the cityscape and invite visitors to explore the lagoon city on foot or by boat. Highlights include St. Mark’s Square with St. Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and a vaporetto ride along the Grand Canal. Away from the beaten track, Venice reveals a quieter, more authentic side – perfect for a relaxed start to your road trip through Italy.

Day 3 - 4: Lake Garda

Lake Garda combines Mediterranean flair with alpine scenery and is one of the most beautiful regions in northern Italy. Picturesque towns such as Sirmione, Malcesine, and Limone sul Garda invite visitors to take strolls along the lakeside promenades. Boat trips on the lake, panoramic viewpoints, and relaxing hours by the water are among the highlights. The varied landscape makes Lake Garda an ideal stopover for combining nature, enjoyment, and relaxation.

Day 5 -6: Parma

Parma is a paradise for connoisseurs and, like no other city, represents Italy’s culinary tradition. Famous for Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma, the region invites visitors to enjoy tastings and visits to local producers. The elegant old town delights visitors with historic buildings such as Parma Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Teatro Farnese. Between culture and cuisine, Parma shows its enjoyable, authentic side-a perfect stopover on the way to the Ligurian coast.

Day 7 - 9: Portofino

Portofino is synonymous with elegant coastal flair, colorful houses, and one of Italy’s most beautiful natural harbors. This small town on the Ligurian Riviera captivates visitors with its picturesque backdrop, exclusive boutiques, and cozy cafés right on the waterfront. Hikes in the Portofino Nature Park offer spectacular views of the sea, while boat trips along the coast or to nearby bays provide a relaxing change of pace. Portofino combines Mediterranean ease, nature, and Italian charm and is a real highlight of this roadtrip.

Day 10 - 11: Pisa

Pisa is known worldwide for one of Italy’s most famous buildings, the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In Piazza dei Miracoli, the tower, cathedral, and baptistery form an impressive ensemble of Romanesque architecture. Away from the famous sights, the old town with its narrow streets, small squares, and cafés invites you to take a leisurely stroll. A stay in Pisa offers the perfect mix of iconic highlights and authentic Tuscan city life before continuing your journey to Florence.

Day 12 - 14: Florenz

Florence is considered the cradle of the Renaissance and inspires visitors with its extraordinary wealth of art, culture, and history. Landmarks such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore with its imposing dome, the Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery are among the absolute highlights. Walks through the historic old town, views from Piazzale Michelangelo, and the enjoyment of Tuscan cuisine make your stay truly special. Florence is the perfect end to this Italian roadtrip – a place where art, architecture, and Italian joie de vivre come together in a unique way.

FAQ & travel tips

When planning your route, bear in mind that Italy is a diverse country and the distances between cities and regions can easily be underestimated. It is therefore advisable to plan realistic daily stages. The motorways are well developed, but side roads – especially in the mountains or in Tuscany – can be narrow and winding.

Historic city centres often have ZTL zones (traffic-restricted areas), so it is advisable to check in advance to avoid fines. A hire car is particularly useful for rural areas, and comprehensive insurance and additional cover are recommended.

The choice of travel time is also crucial: in the summer months, it can get very hot, especially in cities such as Florence or Pisa, while spring and autumn offer moderate temperatures and fewer tourists. For an all-round successful experience, you should allow enough time for coastal towns, wine regions and nature parks – it is the combination of cities and nature that makes a trip to Italy particularly varied.

EU citizens can enter Italy with their identity card, while nationals of other countries require a valid passport. A national driving licence is usually sufficient to drive a vehicle; an international driving licence is only required in exceptional cases.

If you rent a car, you should always carry the rental agreement, insurance documents and information on comprehensive or liability insurance with you. If you have your own vehicle from abroad or a rental car, you should carry the vehicle registration with you on request. In addition, it is advisable to have important documents such as hotel bookings, ferry tickets or booked excursions either digitally available or as a printout at hand so that you can access them quickly in an emergency.

For a varied road trip through Italy, we recommend at least 10-14 days to explore cities, coastal regions, landscapes, and cultural highlights at a leisurely pace.

A roadtrip through Italy is generally feasible even for beginners. The main roads and motorways are well developed, navigation via GPS or offline maps is straightforward, and tourist regions are very well connected.

However, there are a few things to keep in mind: parking can be difficult in cities such as Venice, Florence or Pisa, and special care should be taken in ZTL zones (traffic-restricted areas). On secondary roads in rural areas or in the mountains, the roads are often narrow and winding. Realistic daily stages and sufficient breaks are important, as is familiarising yourself with the traffic rules, Italian driving habits and cultural peculiarities.

With a little planning, a roadtrip through Italy can be a relaxing and unforgettable experience full of culture, impressive landscapes and enjoyment, even for beginners.
