Arabic is the official language of Morocco and is primarily used in administration, media, and schools. Since 2011, Amazigh (Berber languages) has also been recognized as an official language and is widely spoken in rural and mountainous regions such as the Atlas Mountains and the Rif.
French plays an important role as a lingua franca and is commonly used in administration, higher education, business, and tourism. It often serves as the main second language in everyday professional and urban life.
For travelers, knowledge of French or Arabic can be particularly helpful outside major tourist centers. In cities such as Marrakesh, Fez, or Casablanca, however, it is often possible to communicate in English, especially in hotels, restaurants, and tourist-related services.
Entry requirements for Morocco depend on nationality, but several general rules apply. A valid passport is required for all travelers and should be valid for at least six months upon entry.
Citizens of the EU and Switzerland do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Travelers from other countries may need to apply for a tourist visa (Type C) in advance through the Moroccan embassy or consulate in their country of residence.
Upon arrival, proof of onward or return travel may be requested. It is recommended to carry a printed copy of your return or onward flight ticket. While digital tickets on smartphones are often accepted, a printed version provides additional security, in line with entry regulations as of 2025.
For those planning to rent a car, a national driver’s license is generally sufficient, although an international driving permit is recommended. Travel health insurance is not mandatory but is strongly advised to ensure coverage in case of medical emergencies.
In Morocco, it is generally not recommended to drink tap water. While water in major cities such as Marrakesh, Fez, and Casablanca is usually treated, it is not always considered safe for visitors, particularly those with sensitive stomachs.
In rural areas or more remote regions, tap water quality can vary significantly and may pose a health risk. For this reason, it is advisable to drink bottled water and to use it as well for brushing teeth, especially outside major urban centers.
Morocco uses the Moroccan dirham (MAD) as its official currency. One dirham is subdivided into 100 centimes.
Commonly used banknotes include 20, 50, 100, and 200 MAD, while coins are available in denominations of 1, 5, and 10 MAD, as well as smaller centime coins. In larger cities and tourist areas, card payments are increasingly accepted, but in local markets and rural regions, cash remains the preferred method of payment.
Careful planning is essential for any roadtrip, no matter the country. You don’t need to schedule every hour in detail, but having a clear idea of your daily stages will help you travel in a relaxed and structured way.
Choose a vehicle that suits your route. Contrary to popular belief, a 4×4 is not essential in Morocco in most cases. The main roads are generally well developed, and even gravel roads can usually be managed without problems in a smaller vehicle.
Always make sure to carry enough water and snacks with you, especially when traveling through rural areas where shops and services are not available everywhere. Morocco is also known for having strict traffic controls. Drive carefully, respect speed limits at all times, and expect regular police checks, particularly outside cities and towns.
