When planning your route, bear in mind that although the distances are usually short, mountain roads can take considerably longer to drive, so it makes sense to plan realistic daily stages. A vignette is required to use the motorways. In winter, many Alpine passes are closed or can only be driven on with appropriate winter equipment; tunnels or valley roads offer an alternative. In the mountains, you should also be aware of sudden weather changes and winding roads. Parking spaces are usually expensive in cities such as Zurich or Geneva. Accommodation should be booked early, especially in popular regions. In addition, many activities such as cable car rides, boat trips on lakes, or mountain hikes are seasonal and subject to weather conditions.
A valid passport or identity card is sufficient for EU citizens to enter the country. A German or international driver’s license is accepted for driving a vehicle.
