Practical information for your trip

Glencoe is worth a visit at any time of year, yet each season transforms the character of the valley completely. Spring and early summer offer the most stable conditions and the valley’s characteristic lush greenery, whilst autumn bathes the landscape in deep rust-red and gold – an atmosphere that perfectly underscores the valley’s melancholy and history. The winter months are spectacular for lovers of dramatic, snow-capped peaks, but require very flexible planning due to the short days and mountain passes that are often closed. Those wishing to avoid the famous ‘midges’ (small mosquitoes) and the largest crowds will find the ideal balance of light, weather and tranquillity in May or September.

Although the A82 main road runs right through the heart of the valley and you can admire the iconic peaks of the ‘Three Sisters’ as you drive past, we recommend staying in the region for at least one or two nights. A brief stop does little justice to the monumental significance of this place. It is only when you have the time to hike into one of the side valleys, such as ‘Hidden Valley’, or wait for the changing light at Black Rock Cottage, that the true magic of Glencoe reveals itself. Anyone wishing to explore the neighbouring moorland of Rannoch Moor or the historic Glen Etive should consider setting up a longer-term base camp.

Glencoe is the gateway to the Highlands and the epitome of alpine drama in Scotland. In practical terms, this means you are in a high valley where the weather can change extremely quickly. Being well prepared with weatherproof clothing is not just a recommendation here, but a prerequisite for leaving the vehicle at all. As Glencoe is a strategic hub for travellers heading north, the few high-quality accommodation options right in the valley are often booked up very quickly. We therefore take particular care to time our stops so that you can experience the monumental silence of the valley before the day trippers from the larger cities arrive.
