How to get there?

The journey from Zurich to Locarno by car usually takes around 3h 30minutes, although the actual time may vary depending on traffic and the route chosen. By train, the journey time is around 3h 15minutes, which is a comfortable and scenic option to reach sunny Ticino. We personally (as you may have already noticed) prefer the car. Our route usually takes us over the Gotthard or San Bernadino Pass, which is always an impressive and beautiful route to drive. In Ticino, you are also better and more flexible by car (in our opinion), as there are some places where you simply can’t get to by public transport.

Locarno and Ascona: The Hotspot for Movie and Music Festivals

The two towns in Ticino, located close to each other, are an absolute hotspot for visitors. Situated on the impressive Lake Maggiore and surrounded by Italian flair and the idyllic alleyways of the old town, these two towns are a must-see. Here you will not only indulge your senses with the picturesque view or the delicious Italian food, but you also have the opportunity to make your heart beat faster. In Locarno, you can enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view from Cardada-Cimetta by taking the cable car, or you can go on an exciting hike. If you are looking for adrenaline, the nearby Monte Tamaro offers you a cool solution; the first and only Tyrolienne in Ticino.

Locarno has an incomparable Mediterranean flair and is known for its lively Piazza Grande, which is regularly used for events such as the renowned Film Festival.(Tip: also visit the villages on the hillside: Orselina, Muralto, Minusio, Losone…)

For the leisurely walkers among us, visit the imposing Madonna del Sasso, located above Locarno. The pilgrimage church rises on a rocky outcrop within the small Orselina valley and can be reached on foot or by the Locarno-Madonna del Sasso funicular. The sacred rooms are also open to the public and are definitely worth a visit.

Ascona, on the other hand, impresses with its charming alleyways, luxurious boutiques and inviting restaurants. The picturesque town offers a unique blend of culture, art and gastronomy and invites you to stroll along the beautiful lakeside promenade or through the idyllic old town. There is no shortage of activities here, from hiking, cycling, boat tours, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking to stand-up paddling and much more … you won’t be bored in Ascona.

Cooling off on the beach at Tegna

Tegna is a charming little village not far from Locarno. Easily accessible by car, the so-called “Terre di Pedemonte beach” is an insider’s tip for swimming. An absolutely recommendable place for bathing fun and relaxation. Right next to the parking lot there is a local retired couple who run a small kiosk right next to their house and sell you drinks and snacks there; we recommend the piadinas 🙂

The sand, the waterfall and the clear water will transport you to a sunny paradise.

Action and adventure in the Verzasca Valley

The Verzasca Valley is a place of incomparable natural beauty. Known for its crystal-clear, turquoise waters and imposing rock faces, it attracts visitors from all over the world. The beautiful Verzasca River meanders through the valley, surrounded by lush vegetation and picturesque little villages that blend harmoniously into the landscape. This is a mecca for nature and hiking enthusiasts, giving you the opportunity to explore the unspoiled nature and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. If you are brave enough, you can also go swimming in the cold river or experience the fascination of canyoning. In addition to the natural beauty, Verzasca is also rich in historic villages such as Lavertezzo with its incomparable stone buildings and the famous Ponte dei Salti bridge, which towers over the crystal-clear river. A tip, for the summer it is a beautiful place to relax and swim … but be on the road early enough, the later it gets, the more visitors it has.

The dam in the Verzasca Valley is not only an impressive feat of engineering, but also an attraction for adventure seekers. The dam became famous above all for the spectacular scenes in the James Bond film “Goldeneye”, in which 007 jumps from the dam. In fact, the dam is a popular place for bungee jumping, where you can plunge 220 meters down. This breathtaking experience not only offers an adrenaline rush, but also an incomparable view of the picturesque landscape of the Verzasca Valley.

Discover the picturesque village of Corippo

Idyllically situated in the Verzasca Valley lies the incredibly impressive little village of Corippo, one of the smallest inhabited villages in Switzerland.A narrow road leads you up to the village nestled in the hillside and gives you the opportunity to travel back in time. The village consists of traditional stone buildings with rustic charm, built close together and offering a picturesque backdrop. Take the time to soak up the authentic old life of the Ticino people and feel how time seems to stand still here. The incomparable charm and almost fairytale atmosphere will make this excursion unforgettable. Corippo is a hidden gem in Ticino that will enchant you with its natural beauty and rich history.

The small Maggia Valley at the end of Ticino

The Maggia Valley is an enchanting valley that stretches along the shores of Lake Maggiore and is surrounded by majestic mountains. Known for its breathtaking nature and picturesque villages, it has an almost magical attraction. The valley is almost engulfed by lush forests, rushing waterfalls and crystal-clear mountain lakes that invite you to take a dip. Activities such as mountain biking, climbing and hiking are very popular here. One highlight is the impressive Foroglio waterfall, which plunges over 80 meters into the depths. There are charming villages along the valley, especially the village of Moghegno. The village is known for its narrow streets and imposing bell tower. Here you also have the opportunity to discover historic churches, chapels, castle ruins, local specialties and craftsmanship in the traditional stores and restaurants.Overall, we think the Maggia Valley is well worth a visit and is also a great spot for barbecuing and swimming in summer. 🙂

Lugano: From the picturesque old town to luxury shopping

Lugano is a picturesque, lively city. From the shores of Lake Lugano to the narrow streets of the old town, Lugano will charm you. Its cultural heritage is particularly fascinating and is reflected in the numerous museums and galleries, including the Lugano Art Museum with its impressive collection of modern art. The city also boasts a lively culinary scene that will spoil you with traditional dishes from the region. Here, too, the Mediterranean flair and the beauty of the Alps are indescribable. If you like hiking, there is a popular route up Monte San Salvatore, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the city and Lake Lugano. Climbing and canyoning in the surrounding mountains and gorges is also definitely an experience. You can also hire a boat on Lake Lugano and explore the picturesque landscape from the water. No matter what you do, whether you take a leisurely stroll through the old town and the lively lakeside promenade, explore the traditional cuisine or experience an action-packed activity, it will create unforgettable memories.Ps. In July, the legendary Estival Jazz takes place on the Piazza. An absolute must for all jazz fans.

Our culinary favorites

With every visit we feel the magic and beauty of the different places in Ticino anew. Our hearts were taken by storm on our first visit to Ticino and each time it brings us new unforgettable memories and delicacies. 😀

Morcote: The Tuscan village just before the Italian border

Morcote is a small, incomparable village on the shores of Lake Lugano. Morcote is known for its charming old town and its botanical garden, the Parco Scherrer Garten. This botanical garden stretches along the slopes above the village and is home to a fascinating collection of exotic plants and sculptures from all over the world. Another feature is the church of Santa Maria del Sasso, which towers high above the village and offers a spectacular view of the lake. The drive from Lugano to Morcote was not only idyllic, but also offered picturesque views of the manicured surroundings and charming houses along the way.
